1849 Brand Artichoke Pasta Sauce with Merlot recreates, if you will, the flavors of traditional Gold Rush ear Italian minder's cooking.
The 1849 Pasta Sauces are hands down some of the best pasta sauces we've tasted. The Artichoke is particularly lovely - large chunks of artichoke hearts combined with Merlot and a hearty tomato base makes this pasta sauce a winner.
Why 1849? Because in 1849, the average man ate pasta hot or cold, more than 10 times a week. Miners in the golden hills of California came from Northern Italy, and when they weren't digging for gold, they were cooking their tomatoes, adding their basil, and getting the pasta ready. One of these men, Achille Paladini, settled in San Francisco, and it is thanks to him that we have 'cioppino', also available here.
The original carb-loaders, Italian miners in 1849 were better known for their cooking than their skills with the gold pans!
